Long Point - The Coorong - South Australia
Our Long Point dx site was probably the most fun dx site that we ever used. Back in the early 90's Craig Edwards and I would often stay at the Strathalbyn Fishing Clubs hut for up to a week. Often it was summer and temps soared past the 40's and it made live interesting. During the day we would sit around drinking beer in the heat and would often head off to the Menengie Pub some 25km away. It was always fun when the netball girls were in. We often never made it back in time for the prime dx. And we were that drunk it didn't matter.
We had some enormous cricket matches. I still have scars from turning pine cones that we would use as a test match ball and a fence paling as a bat. We often venured to the MCG (Meningie Cricket ground) for a couple of hours hard training to sweat the hangovers out. Dx wise it was a great spot for Europeans and also Asians. Like Parnka Point Indonesians and The Philippines were sensational. The Indonesians in particular were great on MW and the Tropical Bands. In those early days life there was rough. The shower was tank water with a 12v heater that just took the chill off the water. The outside toilet was infested with Redback Spiders. I can give you the mail nobody hung around there too long reading the WRTH. Lots of great memories with guys like Craig, Steve Perkins, Lew Chapman, Leigh Morris, Dean Pudney, Dave Martin, Dave Headland and John Smith. It's a pity we lost use of the hut. It was sold by the club to a local fisherman and renovated very nicely. |
